The Allergy Relief Center Newsletter – February, 2004 Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities. Inflammation of the sinuses could be due to an allergy, an infection or ongoing exposure to an irritant such as smoke or air pollution. Sinus disease can also be triggered by factors such as blowing the nose too hard, not clearing up an infection fully, getting chilled, not resting and drinking iced drinks. In an allergy sufferer, after sneezing, exhaustion and little rest, the sinus infection may become chronic. Weather can exacerbate a sinus infection, but it is not a cause. When sinusitis is caused by a bacterial or viral infection, it is often called “acute sinusitis”. This condition can occur after a bad cold. The cold virus attacks the lining of your sinuses, causing them to swell and become narrow. Your body responds to the virus by producing more mucus, but it gets blocked in your swollen sinuses. This built-up mucus creates a good place for bacteria to grow. This bacteria can cause a sinus infection. Most sinus problems show slow nasal cilia. These are the microscopic hairs that beat to move the bacteria out of the nose into the throat where they are swallowed and the stomach takes them out. By using saline with a pulsating irrigation device , the thick mucus is removed so that the cilia return to normal rate of beating. Numerous medical journal articles recommend this treatment for both sinusitis and allergen control. Drinking plenty of water will help to thin the mucus so that it moves more easily. As long as you are not on a fluid restriction, one should intake daily of 6 to 8 glasses of non-caffeine, non-alcoholic fluid daily. A nasal wash helps remove mucus and germs from the nose and sinuses. This can temporarily decrease the postnasal drip and help your sinuses to drain better. A nasal wash will clean the mucus from your nose so medication can be more effective. It can clean allergens and irritants from the nose and decrease the swelling inside the nose. A throat irrigator , a safe, simple and drugless method is an important alternative at a time when the effectiveness of drugs is diminished by the rapid appearance of drug-resistant diseases, removes bacteria from the throat and increases circulation to the throat, making more white blood cells, the body's natural defense against viral and bacterial infections and postnasal drip. Many people with asthma or other lung problems also have nasal and
sinus symptoms. Drainage from the nose and sinuses can make asthma worse
especially at night. Nasal irrigation and/or nasal wash can help reduce
this. The Allergy Relief Center offers high-quality,
physician-recommended products for your sinus relief, sinus congestion
